Kayak Sailing and Mores goal is to inform, enlighten, educate, act as a resource and entertain those of you who are interested in the
sport and adventure of kayak sailing, sea kayaking, kayak fishing, other outdoor interests and what nature has to offer. I hope you find it interesting, useful, worthwhile, amusing and most of all fun.
I kayak sail and sea kayak mostly in Monterey Bay, San Francisco
Bay, Half Moon Bay and Lake Tahoe regions of California. I occasionally paddle or sail Alaska, Canada, Baja, the Gulf Coast and have been know to use my sea kayak at Lake Powell. As time allows
I will add sea kayak photos and trip reports from these areas and also include photos and reports from Elkhorn Slough, Santa Cruz, Uvas Lake and anywhere else I may happen to paddle, sail or fish. I
lean towards ocean kayaking, sailing and fishing but fresh water doesn't scare me (not to much anyway). I very much enjoy the water sports or wet sport of sea kayaking, kayak sailing, and kayak fishing
from my sea kayak. Sometimes I sail using a parafoil kite or I go umbrella sailing.
Kayaks: At this time my main kayak is a Kevlar Necky Arluk III. I also own a Chesapeake Light Craft kayak otherwise know as a CLC kayak along
with 12' outriggers for the kayak sail rig. I also own a Russian Folding Double kayak and two ancient river kayaks. The Russian Folding
Double has two seats but can be paddled by one, two or three people. I also have the remains of two wooden folding kayaks I had made many years ago. A large oak tree fell and smashed these two boats.
Oh yea, I forgot about my lay on top skin diving kayak. I think that's about it for kayaks
Kayak Sails: I own two kayak sail rigs. Both are from Balogh Sail Designs. www.baloghsaildesigns.com Both kayak sails are Balogh Batwings. One is a 32' sq and the other
is a 36'sq sail. Both sails are the Expedition model. I use the Wishbone option with both setups. If your in the market, Balogh Sail Designs products are excellent. I would purchase from them again
without hesitation.
Occasionally I like to use a 16' sq parafoil kite for propulsion. Along with the kite I use 300 LB test parachute cord. The heavy cord makes
it easy to recover the kite because it doesn't cut my hands. The other positive thing about the weight of the cord is it keeps the kite flying a
little lower in the sky which means the kite develops more forward thrust. I won't use this setup until I see whitecaps. You need heavy
winds otherwise the kite drops out of the sky after the kayak picks up speed.
My other wind propulsion unit is a beach umbrella I bought from
Costco. Its easy to put up and take down and it was cheap. The umbrella moves my kayak about 4 mph in 10 -15 mph winds. It is also good in camp for sun shade and rain protection.
I am a long time club member of the Western Sea Kayakers or WSK as it is know locally. www.westernseakayakers.org I was also a member of BASK or Bay Area Sea Kayakers. www.bask.org I am a
kayak gear junky or should I say gear junky. Last year at the Western Sea Kayakers Holiday Party I won the coveted award of "Most Gear
on a Single Kayak" of which I am proud. Kayak sailing, ocean fishing and photography have a tendency of using a lot of gear. . Now you know a little about me, my kayaks and sail rigs.
